Director, Strategy & Execution – Managed Accounts for Individual (Retail) Investors
We believe that, when done right, investing liberates people to create their own destiny. We are driven by our purpose to champion every client’s goals with passion and integrity. We respect and appreciate the diversity of our employees, our clients, and the communities we serve. We challenge conventions strategically to create value for our clients, our firm and the world. We live and bring to life the concept of ‘own your tomorrow’ every day. We champion our employee strengths, guide their development, and invest in their long-term success. We hire optimistic, results-oriented, curious, innovative, and adaptable people with the desire to help our clients and one another succeed.
As a company, we were established by Chuck over 40 years ago to champion Main Street over Wall Street, and to help Americans transform themselves from earners to owners. Through advocacy and innovation, we work to make investing more affordable, accessible and understandable for all. As we enter our fifth decade, we are looking for talented, innovative and driven people who believe they can help themselves, and our clients, create a better future.
Our Organization:
Schwab’s Wealth & Advice Solutions (WAS) organization drives our strategy to create an integrated Wealth and Advice Solutions business and prioritize the investments we make in them. Within WAS, Investment Offers & Solutions (IOS) is responsible for managing our third-party and proprietary product marketplaces (e.g., Alternative Investments, Managed Accounts, Mutual Funds, ETFs). Our mission is to provide a positive experience for the Schwab clients that invest in these products, while growing a revenue stream which is vital to Schwab’s overall financial health.
Within IOS, Managed Accounts Solutions (MAS) is responsible for the end-to-end management of our third-party and proprietary managed investing solutions, primarily Separately Managed Accounts (SMA). To do this, we design and implement a strategic vision, maintaining a robust product offering, develop new tools and research for clients, deepen third-party and proprietary asset management relationships, and work effectively with partners to create a strong positive client experience. Serving individual investors, registered investment advisors (RIAs), retirement plans, and other institutional clients, our Managed Accounts solutions are a centralized and shared resource for the firm.
Our Opportunity:
As more and more individual clients are employing Managed Accounts in their portfolio, we see an opportunity to enhance the products, services and experience we provide to our retail client base. The Director will be responsible for owning the end-to-end vision and roadmap, developing business strategy, designing and leading high-impact efforts intended to maximize our ability to meet the needs of clients and their advisors. This includes strategic plans to evolve our solutions to be more modern and competitive, while continuing to lead the day-to-day business. The Director will play a critical role in advising and aligning with leaders related to the broader Managed Accounts business, Schwab Wealth Advisory and Investor Services priorities, and across related enterprises’ business strategies.
The Director, who will report to the Managing Director of Managed Account Solutions, will define long-term strategy, lead initiatives towards the vision state, while accountable for ongoing execution of our managed account solutions and platforms with third-party asset managers (Managed Account Select) and our proprietary SMAs (e.g., Wasmer Schroeder, Schwab Personalized Indexing). The Director will plan and manage tradeoff decisions and roadmap prioritization to innovate and enhance these offerings. Additionally, the Director owns the business oversight and risk management of the platforms, as well as the development of the key objectives and measurable results for the business. This is a people leader role and the ability to drive change and achieve results by creating and leading a high-performing and engaged team is critical for success.
Cross-enterprise leadership and influence is crucial to the success of this role, as well experience driving measurable outcomes. The Director will engage with internal partners (e.g., client-facing, operations, digital, legal and compliance), and external partners (e.g., asset managers, technology vendors) to ensure alignment and progress on mutual goals and objectives. They will be self-motivated, results and details oriented, have a strong sense of urgency, and be able to independently lead major cross-functional initiatives and project implementation.
