At Schwab, technology infrastructure is critical to delivering exceptional experiences for our clients and employees. As a Senior Specialist, Hardware Systems Engineering, you will play a key role in supporting and optimizing our data center and critical technology environments.
In this hands-on role, you will partner with Infrastructure & Operations teams, facilities teams, telecommunications providers, and external vendors to ensure the reliability, security, and efficiency of hardware deployments across our technology environments. You will help design and manage technology spaces, oversee hardware lifecycle activities, coordinate connectivity and infrastructure projects, and serve as a trusted technical resource for data center operations.
- Support daily operations within critical technology and data center environments, ensuring the availability and reliability of infrastructure services.
- Partner with engineering, operations, facilities, and project teams to gather and translate hardware and infrastructure requirements into technology space and deployment plans.
- Develop and maintain IT space design documentation, including rack layouts, power allocation, cabling design, and capacity planning.
- Coordinate installation, deployment, relocation, and decommissioning of technology hardware, including servers, storage systems, network devices, and telecommunications equipment.
- Manage technology asset inventory and data center capacity using Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) tools.
- Serve as the primary technology liaison for facilities and security activities impacting critical technology areas.
- Coordinate structured cabling, connectivity projects, telecommunications circuit deliveries, and vendor access requirements.
- Manage IT Asset Disposition (ITAD) activities, ensuring secure data handling, asset tracking, audit compliance, and vendor coordination.
- Troubleshoot and resolve Layer 1 connectivity issues involving cabling, cross-connects, circuit extensions, and physical infrastructure.
- Partner with third-party vendors to support hardware maintenance, deployments, environmental monitoring, and recycling initiatives.
- Support and maintain operations across multiple data center locations throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) metroplex, ensuring high availability, reliability, and operational efficiency.
What you have
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Engineering, Computer Science, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience supporting data center, network, telecommunications, or critical technology environments.
- Experience with hardware installation, configuration, and deployment activities, including rack-and-stack implementations.
- Knowledge of structured cabling, physical network infrastructure, and Layer 1 troubleshooting.
- Experience managing technology assets and hardware lifecycle activities.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work effectively across technical and non-technical teams.
- Experience working with business productivity and project management tools.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience using DCIM solutions such as Nlyte for capacity planning, asset management, and technology space documentation.
- Experience with IT Asset Disposition (ITAD) processes, including decommissioning, inventory tracking, data sanitization, compliance documentation, and vendor coordination.
- Experience using Visual Studio Code (VS Code) as a primary development environment, including debugging, extension management, and workspace configuration.
- Proficiency in one or more programming languages such as Python, Java, JavaScript/TypeScript, C#, or Go.
- Familiarity with data center space planning, power management, cooling requirements, and infrastructure design.
- Experience supporting telecommunications carrier installations, circuit delivery, and demarcation extensions.
- Experience working with AutoCAD, Microsoft Project, Remedy, or similar infrastructure management tools.
- BICSI certification, Registered Communications Distribution Designer (RCDD), or equivalent industry certification.
