Your opportunity

At Schwab, you’re empowered to make an impact on your career. Here, innovative thought meets creative problem solving, helping us “challenge the status quo” and transform the finance industry together.

We believe in the importance of in-office collaboration and fully intend for the selected candidate for this role to work on site in the specified location.

About the Team

The Retail Web Technology (RWT) organization is responsible for developing and enhancing Schwab's Trade Watchlist and Quick Quote experiences for retail investors. Our mission is to deliver reliable, scalable, and intuitive digital solutions that enable clients to make informed investment decisions with confidence.

We embrace modern engineering practices, automation, AI-enabled innovation, and continuous improvement to solve complex business challenges. At RWT, engineers work collaboratively across product, architecture, and development teams to deliver exceptional client experiences while driving technical excellence and operational reliability.

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) to join our engineering team. This role combines strong software engineering skills with modern quality engineering practices to ensure the delivery of resilient, scalable, secure, and client-centric solutions.

As an SDET, you will design, develop, and maintain automation frameworks, quality engineering tools, test infrastructure, and continuous validation capabilities that enable rapid and reliable software delivery. You will partner closely with software engineers, product owners, business analysts, architects, and platform teams to embed quality throughout the software development lifecycle.

Beyond traditional test automation, you will drive quality strategy, improve engineering productivity, leverage AI-assisted development practices, and strengthen operational excellence through observability, reliability engineering, and continuous improvement initiatives.

This role is ideal for engineers who enjoy solving complex technical challenges, building scalable automation solutions, influencing engineering practices, and delivering high-quality software from concept through production.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain scalable automation frameworks and reusable test libraries supporting web applications, APIs, microservices, and distributed systems.
  • Build automated validation solutions for functional, integration, regression, end-to-end, accessibility, and cross-browser testing.
  • Develop and execute comprehensive test strategies aligned to business workflows, application architecture, integration points, and system dependencies.
  • Drive shift-left quality practices by partnering with engineering teams during requirements, design, and development phases.
  • Implement risk-based testing approaches to improve coverage, efficiency, and release confidence.
  • Contribute production-quality code using modern software engineering principles, design patterns, and secure coding practices.
  • Integrate automated validation into CI/CD pipelines to enable continuous testing and rapid feedback throughout the delivery lifecycle.
  • Partner with development teams to improve testability, quality metrics, coding standards, and engineering effectiveness.
  • Conduct code reviews and contribute to technical design discussions that improve software quality, maintainability, and scalability.
  • Design and execute performance, load, resiliency, reliability, and security testing strategies.
  • Support production readiness through monitoring, observability, logging, dashboards, alerting, and incident analysis.
  • Analyze complex defects, troubleshoot automation failures, and drive root-cause analysis across distributed systems.
  • Support highly available customer-facing applications and contribute to continuous reliability improvements.
  • Leverage AI-assisted engineering tools to accelerate automation development, improve productivity, enhance test coverage, and streamline engineering workflows.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies, frameworks, and testing approaches to continuously improve quality engineering capabilities.
  • Champion engineering excellence through collaboration, knowledge sharing, quality advocacy, and continuous improvement initiatives and data-driven decision-making.
